LONG LIVE OUR LEGENDS

Malay Folklore: Integrating Values Learnt for the 21st Century Malay

What does the exhibition aim to achieve?

Our exhibition focuses on the mighty legends of Hang Tuah, Singapura Dilanggar Todak and Si Badang. These stories are those that highlight the important values of loyalty, resilience and love. There are timeless lessons that our legends from the past portray and teach us that can be mirrored to address the complexities of the situation the Malay community live in today. Join us in our exhibition to find out more about our legends and how they can be reconciled with the issues and complexities surrounding the socio-economic status of the Malay community since independence.

Exhibition Pieces

Kain Bunga

Our exhibition begins with Kain Bunga, a canvas piece that introduces the context of the exhibition. This piece brings forth the significance of the timeless Malay folklore in our society today as it pertains to the modern realities of the Malay community.

Finding Tuah is a special feature of our exhibition, inspired by the story of Hang Tuah who went into hiding after he was unjustly ordered to be executed by the Sultan. These stickers, designed by Nur Farhana Fitri Binte Padilah, are pasted around the exhibition. Visitors can look for and count these stickers to unlock another special exhibition piece. A quote from her artist statement: “Doodling and creating little cartoon characters become an outlet for me to release some stress, which is why most of my artwork has a more cartoon-ish style.”

Finding Tuah

Weaving Identity

Inspired by Kyle Meyer’s Interwoven, as well as the weaving traditions that has become ubiquitous in the Malay world - from the weaving of cloth, baskets and mats to furniture and roofs - this piece simultaneously distorts the clarity of the portraits as it brings forth the identities of the subjects. A collaboration with Raja Nurul Huda Binte Raja Ahmad, this piece is sure to get you thinking!

The romantic title of this piece was aimed at juxtaposing the meaning behind the sculpture which depicts the conflict between two duty-bound officials, two friends, and two ideologies. As the music band PUBLIC sings, put your hand in mine and come view this piece for yourself in person!

Highs and Lows

of Badang

Highs and Lows of Badang is an homage to the individuals who have had to push through hardships in life much like Badang. In collaboration with Kin Productions, this interactive piece aims to highlight strength, resilience, and support from others as important elements for getting through the challenges of life.

Todak Perspectives

This digital illustration by Zuhaira Syaza Binte Amir Khaled is such an alluring interpretation of the legend of Singapura Dilanggar Todak with interesting choice of colours and style! This is a piece you don’t want to miss.

Todak Tees

Inspired by Farizi Noorfauzi’s gripping work titled Baju Kurung, Sangkar Burung (2017), Todak Tees is a visual representation of the Malay peribahasa “Bersatu teguh, bercerai roboh” which means “Together we stand, divided we fall”. This piece was sewn together painstakingly by our very own RB members!

Mirroring Heroes

Who were your heroes growing up? How are you like them now? This reflective (pun intended) piece, in collaboration with Nur Atiqah Farzana Binte Anuar, invites you to think about how much the values upheld by the heroes in the legends are manifested within you.
